Crochet Gone Wrong, Is this Really a Sock?

Hey y’all

I love to crochet. It’s very relaxing, most of the time. I haven’t done very much lately because I’ve been waiting for the right project. I was sitting at my desk the other day grading papers (we homeschool) and my feet were cold so I thought, “hey, I could crochet a pair of socks!” So, I set out on Pinterest to find a somewhat simple crochet pattern for socks. I found one and I read through it briefly and decided I could handle it. Then I searched for the right yarn.

First of all, there is nothing wrong with this pattern. I want to make that clear…absolutely nothing wrong with this crochet pattern. (you can find it here)

Look at this before and after picture. You have to be laughing at the before right now. I had a feeling something was wrong but at the time I didn’t want to start over so I decided to keep on with my single crochets and see how this sad thing ended up. Oh my gosh, I showed it to my kids and they asked me what the heck it was, haha. Like, which way do you turn that thing to figure out what it is. My 7 year old said I could save it and use it as my Christmas stocking because it will fit ALOT of candy. She’s not wrong but I wanted a sock for my feet. I scratched my head and decided it had to be me and not the pattern. Yeah, it was me.

I have no idea why, but for the life of me I cannot follow a pattern on a web page. I will get it wrong every single time. And if you haven’t read the about page yet then you might not know that I have 6 kids and I get interrupted all the time. I lose count. I went back to the website, wrote down the pattern on paper and took the yarn out all the way back to the leg part. Turns out I had too many rows for the leg/tube part. No wonder the thing wouldn’t stay up when I tried it on. I also realized there was instructions for small feet vs bigger feet. I am almost 6 feet tall and I definitely have a bigger foot, no way I’m squeezing these big ole things in a size 6 sock. I followed the pattern written down and dared anyone in the house to talk to me while I counted each stitch and row. I confess, I had to use a post it note to keep with rows and stitch counts, LOL.

The result is of course the after picture. Gasp, it actually looks like a sock! Who knew, AND it fits. It’s amazing what happens when you follow the patter correctly. The problem I have now is that I chose yarn that it took all I had left to make the one sock and now I don’t have enough on hand to make a match. (face palm) Last night I didn’t really care though because I walked around with that one sock on with one cozy foot, didn’t even notice the other one was freezing because I was so excited about my new crochet sock.

Confession: I ordered some “sweater” socks from Amazon and now both feet are warm and stylish.

Hey y'all, I'm a homeschool mom to 6 kids. I like to write, crochet, love all things Mickey Mouse, dabble in Cricut crafts and anything else I put my mind to or see on Pinterest that I love. My favorite thing I like to do is make people laugh, especially other moms. Life is chaos, I live it everyday and boy do I keep it real. Like I tell my friends....Teenagers to Toddlers, it's pure chaos y'all!

Thank you Pat. Although, I’m pretty sure I was closer to my mid 20s when we first met, haha.
